Recommended Attractions
Recommended famous sightseeing spots in Ise, Mie, to make your independent trip even more enriching
Ise Grand Shrine
"Ise Grand Shrine" can be said to be the spiritual center of the Japanese people. It is regarded as a pilgrimage destination that one must visit at least once in a lifetime and is considered the highest-ranking among all shrines. Ise Grand Shrine has a long history of about 2,000 years and consists of 125 shrines and sanctuaries, including the "Naiku," which enshrines the imperial ancestor Amaterasu Omikami, and the "Geku," which enshrines Toyouke Omikami. It also houses the "Yata no Kagami," one of the Three Sacred Treasures. Remember that the proper order of worship is from Geku to Naiku, and photography is not allowed. In addition, Tsukiyomi-no-miya within Naiku is a place where women can pray for health and beauty, making it a famous romantic spot as well. After visiting the shrine, you can stroll along the approach to "Okage Yokocho," where there are many famous local specialty foods to enjoy, and you can also shop for souvenirs.

Futami Okitama Shrine & Meoto Iwa
In addition to Ise Grand Shrine, we also recommend visiting "Meoto Iwa" within the grounds of "Futami Okitama Shrine" in Futami Town. Meoto Iwa is a famous romantic spot in Mie Prefecture. Located in Futamiura, the larger rock, representing the husband, is 9 meters high, while the smaller rock, representing the wife, is 4 meters high, and they are connected by a large sacred rope measuring 35 meters in length. The scenery of Meoto Iwa changes with the seasons. The sunrise from May to July is especially recommended, as the sun rises right between the two rocks, while from November to January, you can see the full moon rising between them. If you want to enjoy a romantic moment with your loved one, this is the place to go!

Iga-ryu Ninja Museum
There are many schools of ninja techniques, among which the most famous are the Iga school (northwestern Mie Prefecture) and the Koga school (southern Shiga Prefecture). Therefore, Iga City in Mie Prefecture is also known as the hometown of ninjas. At the "Iga-ryu Ninja Museum," many Iga ninjas who served feudal lords during the Warring States period and engaged in secret intelligence activities are introduced through related materials and collected exhibits. The museum has three facilities: the "Ninja Tradition Hall," which mainly houses archival collections; the "Ninja Trick House," converted from a wealthy farmer's residence; and the "Ninjutsu Experience Hall." There is also a small theater where you can watch professional ninja performances and get a glimpse into the world of ninjas!

Tofu Dengaku
One of Mie Prefecture's local dishes. It is said that in ancient times, seafood was not easy to obtain, so tofu became an important source of protein. To create more variety, homemade miso was spread on the surface of the tofu and then grilled over charcoal. Each shop has its own homemade miso, so visiting different shops to taste various styles of tofu dengaku is also one of the pleasures of traveling in Mie Prefecture.
