Race Information

Detailed event information and notes are provided below

Highlights of the 2026 Nara Marathon

  • The Nara Marathon is one of Japan’s must-run winter races. Not only has it been selected as one of the "100 Best Marathons in Japan," but the course also passes through thousand-year-old capital landmarks such as the Suzaku Gate of the Heijo Palace Site and Kasuga Taisha Shrine, allowing runners to become travelers through time while breaking a sweat and savoring the culture.
  • The course is highly challenging, extending from the city into the mountains, with dramatic elevation changes and a total climb of approximately 350 m.
  • The route is also full of Nara’s unique charm: leisurely deer in Nara Park often wander near the course, and many runners say, "It just doesn’t feel complete without taking a photo with them." Students and local residents cheer enthusiastically, energizing runners, and aid stations in the mountain sections offer local food and encouragement, making the challenge feel even warmer and more memorable.
  • The Nara Marathon is one of the designated races for the Abbott World Marathon Majors (Abbott WMM) Age Group World Rankings. It features age-group rankings specifically for runners aged 40 and above, divided into 5-year age brackets, and results are directly counted toward the global ranking list, making it especially attractive for runners aiming to challenge age-group rankings.

Things to Do

Recommended famous sightseeing spots in Nara to make your independent trip even more enriching

✨Nara Park

Nara Park is a park with a long history. Across its vast grounds are famous attractions designated as World Cultural Heritage sites, including Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Kofuku-ji Temple, Todai-ji Temple, the Nara National Museum, and Shosoin, along with beautiful natural scenery. The park is located in the center of the city, making transportation to various sightseeing spots very convenient.

✨Kasuga Taisha Shrine

"To the right of Tobihino lies an approach lined with stone lanterns on both sides. Following this path eastward leads to the south gate of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Backed by Mount Mikasa and surrounded by lush ancient trees, the shrine’s red buildings appear especially vivid.

This land was originally dedicated to the local deity of Kasuga. Later, the Fujiwara clan enshrined Takemikazuchi-no-Mikoto and Futsunushi-no-Mikoto here from Kashima and Katori respectively, and later also welcomed Ame-no-Koyane-no-Mikoto, the ancestral deity, and Himegami from Hiraoka. In 768 (Jingo Keiun 2), Kasuga Shrine was established to enshrine these four deities together. Originally the clan shrine of the Fujiwara family, Kasuga Shrine later developed into a place where the state conducted ritual ceremonies.

✨Todai-ji Temple

Speaking of Nara, one cannot fail to mention the Great Buddha of Nara. The Great Buddha enshrined in the Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall) of Todai-ji Temple has become a symbol of Nara. The Daibutsuden remains the largest wooden building in the world today. By the early Meiji period, the hall had developed many aging issues such as a tilting roof, and it was not until 1909 (Meiji 42), near the end of the Meiji era, that restoration work finally began, with completion in 1913 (Taisho 2). During the Showa period, the Nandaimon Gate, Tengaimon Gate, and other areas were also repaired, and in 1978 (Showa 53), 110,000 new roof tiles were installed on the Daibutsuden roof.

✨Mount Wakakusa

Mount Wakakusa has an elevation of 342 meters, with relatively gentle mountain paths, and the entire mountain is covered in grass. Because it looks like three overlapping sedge hats, it is also called "Mikasa-yama." Mount Wakakusa is famous for the traditional Nara event "Yamayaki Festival," held every January.

It takes about 30 minutes on foot from the entrance at the foot of the mountain to reach the summit. From the top, you can see Nara scenery such as Kofuku-ji Temple and Todai-ji Temple. (The night view from Mount Wakakusa has been selected as one of the "New Three Great Night Views of Japan.")
