Itinerary Overview

Japan's "Kanazawa Marathon" was selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Marathons in its very first year in 2015. Known as "Little Kyoto," Kanazawa has preserved precious historical and sightseeing resources from the Edo-period "Kaga Domain." Along the race course, you can step into history and culture, visit ancient castle ruins, experience local folk traditions, and even see with your own eyes one of the world’s most beautiful stations, "Kanazawa Station."

A circular route takes you through seven areas, allowing you to fully experience the charm of Kanazawa.

With the slogan "Run Through All of Kanazawa," this trip will take you through seven distinctive areas of the city, including the "city center," "historic scenery," "mountain main route," "student town education district," "old highway streetscape," "rural area overlooking the Hakusan mountain range," and the "new city center west of the station."

The Kanazawa Marathon course has been certified as an "official course" by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations, World Athletics, and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). It is the first full marathon course in the Hokuriku region to receive international certification.

Things to Do

Recommended famous sightseeing spots in Kanazawa to make your independent trip even more enriching

Kenrokuen Garden

Kenrokuen is one of Japan’s three most beautiful gardens and a must-visit destination in Kanazawa. The name Kenrokuen means “combining six attributes,” representing the garden’s stunning beauty: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, water features, and magnificent views. Covering 11.4 hectares, the garden is located on elevated ground in central Kanazawa next to Kanazawa Castle. It has been maintained and restored over generations by the Maeda family, who ruled the Kaga Domain during the feudal era (present-day Ishikawa and Toyama regions).

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

Opened in 2004, this museum stands out from traditional art museums. Its distinctive feature is its circular design, as if it were a UFO that landed in the center of Kanazawa. All of its walls are made of glass, and the building has five entrances opening toward different directions of the city.

Oyama Shrine

Oyama Shrine, which enshrines Maeda Toshiie, was relocated here in 1873. Its front shrine gate is a three-story gate blending Japanese, Western, and Chinese architectural styles. As a historic structure built in 1875, it is now designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
